The return of the Stitch!!

On the contrary to popular belief, the art of knitting is in fact the new ‘old’ craze to sweep the interior design and fashion world alike! Just when we thought knitting was a dying art, the fashion and interior design world go and surprise us once again and reinvent it as a ‘trendy’ past time!

People of all ages (surprisingly) are learning the ‘old school’ art of knitting. This is an interesting turn-of-events.  An increasing number of people during this current economic “slump” are understandably trying to make a savings anyway they can. I discovered, after reading an article in Vogue, that knitting was not only a penny saving solution but also a new fashion craze.

I was delighted by this nugget of information! At the age of 23, I can knit. Nevertheless, I had not considered this ‘skill’ to be of any use in today’s society…until now!

With this new frame of mind (naturally reinforced by the ‘cool’ factor of Vogue supporting me) I was a woman on a mission. “I’m ahead of the game, I already know how to knit” I thought. “I know how to ‘cast on’, do a ‘purl stitch’ and knit with various colours”. I suddenly became very grateful for my mandatory knitting sections I endured every lunch time as a young child, when visiting my grandma over the summer! After establishing where my local wool shop was, I scraped my pennies together and off i when.

Unfortunately, my confidence and excitement was slight dampened after discovering that my so called ‘skill’ was not in fact that unusual for a person of my age to have. In fact, Dottie (my wool supplier lady, and now substitute grandma) told me that an increasing number of young people are buying wool and pattern books in order to create their own clothing and various accessories. In fact, Dottie is totally unaware of the credit crunch epidemic as her little business is BOOMING… Move over Alan Sugar, Dottie’s now in town!

Creating fabulously stylish and unique, ‘one-of-a-kind’ home accessories such as throws and cushion slips to dress up or rejuvenate your sofas, chair and beds so very easy (although slightly time consuming for beginners). I am now onto my third cushion cover and second throw, all with the aspiration of revitalizing my very weary looking red leather sofas. I can honestly say, knitting again has been really enjoyable and very relaxing….not to mention a lot more pleasant than my childhood knitting escapades with my grandma, that’s for sure!
