What’s in store for 2009?

With the present economic issues (I’ll try not to bring that up too often), moving house is not such a feasible option for many of us. Consequently, updating your existing nest with inexpensive, functional designs appears to be the practical, cost effective and sensible approach. Stylish, sophisticated and edgy designs are the components to keep in mind if you are hoping to achieve the ‘Autumn/Winter 08/09’ looks. 2009 is set to fight the enduring doom and gloom that is upon us, bringing with it a new lease of life of bright colours and bold patterns. Designers and buyers alike are looking to incorporate traditional influences from around the globe with modern contemporary twists. This look sounds harder to attain than it actually is. By keeping a minimalistic foundation/setting to your home, not only are you giving yourself that freedom for creative expression, but also forming an easier base to work on for possible future redesigns.

In order to make a true impact to a room, placing a single statement piece of furniture such as an unusual sofa, an extravagant chandelier or a whimsical gold leafed mirror is a must. Whatever piece you decide on, be bold. Make a statement with your furniture and remember functional design doesn’t have to cost ample amounts. There are some great deals out there at the moment especially with Christmas around the corner, even try venturing into the odd charity shops now and again. You can find some really authentic classic items for buttons! I personally love Oxfam, they have in some truly wonderful finds and have consistent restock which is always a bonus.

Another route to go down is to accessorize accessorize accessorize! This is a subtle approach yet I believe it requires bold imagination and real panache in order to make it work. There are some amazing ranges of lamps with inter-changing lampshades, vibrant cushions, rugs and intricate artwork to place on your walls, just waiting to be bought! By making the room about the smaller details you are able to give a warm homely feel that is full of character. If you cannot afford to buy new items, consider what you already have. Have a good old rummage in your garage, a little mix around with the items you already have lying around the house or even venture out to the car boot sales! A word of warning, however: try not to overdo this look, it is easy to end up with a room that looks and feels cluttered and over worked!
